effective and efficient manner possible;

Crime Prevention
The Crime Prevention Unit consists of one certified peace officer
whose primary duties are to create a spirit of community by
partnering up with citizens and providing them with the basic
understanding of the fundamental concepts and techniques for
preventing and deterring crime. This task is accomplished by
creating Neighborhood Watch Programs in as many parts of the city as
possible and providing those Neighborhood Watch Programs with a
working knowledge of the importance of
preventing crime by reducing the opportunity for crime. The Crime
Prevention Officer also speaks at he local schools to students of
all ages in an attempt to educate
students on the importance of maintaining a crime free life style.
Records Division
The Records Divisions is maintained by three clerks whose primary
duties are data entry and filing of incoming police reports which
are produced by the police department in the every day course of
work. Other responsibilities are UCR (Uniform Crime Reporting) which
is done every month and given to Department of Public Safety in
Austin, Texas respond to all open records requests, maintain
accident Reports, deliver prepared cases to County Attorney,
District Attorney, Municipal and Juvenile Courts.
Patrol Division
The Hondo Police Department Patrol Division is supervised by a
patrol lieutenant that is assisted by three shift sergeants. The three
shifts work 8 hour shift, Day shift 6:00 AM.
K-9 Patrol
The k-9 unit is specialized branch of the patrol division. It
utilizes the superior abilities of the police service dog to protect
police officers and other persons form injury or death. The canine
unit is routinely depolyed to situations where there is a high
potential of danger other officers. The canine unit provides support
to officers during major disturbances, felony in-progress calls,
burglary or robbery alarms, officer needs assistance calls, pursuits
and is a good deterrent to any resistance. The canine unit is also
routinely used for narcotic detections and tracking. When the canine
unit is not working, it’s training.
Bike Patrol
The bike patrol was initiated as part of our patrol division several
years ago. Since that time, we have had several officers trained in
bicycle patrol tactics. Initially we planned on implementing bike
patrol as full time endeavor, but due to man power constraints, we
were not able to do so. When manpower allows, we use bike patrol as
a community policing tool which is also great for public relations.
Our community’s response to the bike patrol has been very positive.
D. A. R. E.
The D.A.R.E. division,
comprised of three certified D.A.R.E. officers, teaches in four schools in the Hondo
Independent School District. This program also sponsors
community-wide activities and events throughout the year.
